Protecting the surface of aluminum labels

A cut-out from protective foil to be temporarily fixed to an aluminum label with the product details. Requirement for clean and easy removal without adhesive residues.

Description of the problem

The customer's requirement was to mask the aluminium labels during the wet painting process. The labels serve to identify individual hydraulic motors. Prior to the painting process, the labels are fastened to the hydraulic motors with rivets. These rivets must not be masked, they must also be surface-treated.

The main requirements for the tape are therefore the following: resistance to the temperature during painting, cut-outs easily applied, the tape must not leave glue residues.

Our solution

According to these customer requirements, it was decided to use highly durable 3M PVC tape. This tape is very adaptable, flexible and able to perfectly mask even 3D surfaces and rounded lines. It can be easily and cleanly removed even after the process for drying paints at high temperatures. Due to the label’s atypical shape and the requirement for the tape to be easily applied, the kiss-cut process was chosen, where the cut out is delivered on rolls. The cutout also includes a finger-lift to make it easy to remove the tape after the final painting process.
